Part of Richard Byrd's 1934 journal from Advance Base, it reads:

(..) (..) a food fuel for my stove. Perhaps dangerous. I must depend on Kerosene. I must therefore keep the tunnel warm enough to enable me to (..) the Kerosene. When it freezes at 50° below.

Handling the radio is killing. Don’t know how I can keep it up.
a passage from his book Alone:

a lot of the barcos are painted with prayers and pictures, I'm trying to document some before they get ripped up

Been looking at this place, very crude reef on the other side of the harbour wall, when the water's not absolutely calm the waves destroy it.. aditionally it's one of the spots where tiger sharks sometimes breed.. I'm terrified but wanted to get over it.
Steep mossy cliffs underwater, in the middle a zone like an inyard garden, looked like all kinds of fish were having a party there, cruising out with the suction from the other side.. wasn't brave enough to go all the way in yet. Maybe tomorrow.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcDgPpvHnq4

this is the first raven who responded to my tries of making contact (he bowed with me and imitated sounds), threw him a piece of müsli bar and for the next two days he followed me around, gradually closer, vocally demanding parts of the action (food) and then barfing it into the gullet of his betrothed, who joined once in a while but with more distance. There isn't a picture that's not improved by his presence, he is a stunner.

I went diving in the morning- it was riddled with comb jellys, some as large as a basketball, looking like little disco ferries. I couldn't tell if they were dangerous, so got out. Turns out they're not like men of war and don't have stingers.

think this was the border of his territory, did not see him after
