Part of Richard Byrd's 1934 journal from Advance Base, it reads: 
July 13
(..) (..) a food fuel for my stove. Perhaps dangerous. I must depend on Kerosene. I must therefore keep the tunnel warm enough to enable me to (..) the Kerosene. When it freezes at 50° below.
July 15
We must make life beautiful for the people.
I believe I had a strong hold on life.
July 20
Handling the radio is killing. Don’t know how I can keep it up. 
a passage from his book Alone:

 

 a lot of the barcos are painted with prayers and pictures, I'm trying to document some before they get ripped up
 
 Been looking at this place, very crude reef on the other side of the harbour wall, when the water's not absolutely calm the waves destroy it.. aditionally it's one of the spots where tiger sharks sometimes breed.. I'm terrified but wanted to get over it.
Steep mossy cliffs underwater, in the middle a zone like an inyard garden, looked like all kinds of fish were having a party there, cruising out with the suction from the other side.. wasn't brave enough to go all the way in yet. Maybe tomorrow.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcDgPpvHnq4
